“I was received into the church,” states Caryll Houselander at the very beginning of this work “when I was six years old. Strictly speaking, therefore, I am not a ‘cradle’ Catholic, but a rocking-horse Catholic.”

This autobiography, first published in 1955, takes the reader from the author’s Catholic childhood and school days through a period outside the church while she tried to make her living as an artist, to a return to the church. This return was brought about by her insight, so central to all her books into the presence of Christ and others.

A theologian in every sense of the word except the formal academic one, Caryll Houselander understood the central importance of one’s image or concept of God.

“Caryll Houselander artist, odd ball, mystic, friend, and in the end, suffering servant. In the midst of her last illness, she clung to life, loved life with a passion that did not want to die. ‘I honestly long,’ she said, ‘to be told ‘a hundred percent cure’ and to return to this life and celebrate it with gramophone records, giggling and gin.’”—Mitch Finley, Our Sunday Visitor

As a classic in spirituality, the work of Caryll Houselander is very close to the top of the list.

I highly recommend any book by Caryll Houselander. This particular book, A Rocking Horse Catholic, is her autobiography. It is a wonderful glimpse into the childhood, young adulthood, and mystical experiences that influence her writings. A quote to encourage you to read this book: Caryll writes, "I saw too the reverence that everyone must have for a sinner; instead of condoning his sin, which is in reality his utmost sorrow, one must comfort Christ who is suffering in him . And this reverence must be paid even to those sinners whose souls seem to be dead, because it is Christ, who is the life of the soul, who is dead in them; they are His tombs, and Christ in the tomb is potentially the risen Christ."

A RockingHorse Catholic edition by Caryll Houselander Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

The title refers to the fact that the English author wasn't a "cradle Catholic" but rather was baptized at age 6, when her mother semi-converted to the religion; thus she was a "rocking horse Catholic".

I wish I knew why Caryll Houselander (1901-1954) isn't a better known religious author today. When I asked about her books, at a Catholic bookstore, no less, all I got was a blank look from the sales clerk. "Carol who?" She was an excellent writer, with the knack of making Catholic complexities reasonable; understandable, to the Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and yet, almost everything she's written has fallen out of print.

A Rocking Horse Catholic is a short memoir of Ms. Houselander's childhood and young adulthood. Written in a simple, direct, almost conversational style, it's an autobiography that can be read and enjoyed by anyone of almost any age. While I don't really admire Houselander's poetry (at least, from the samples in this book) her prose is by turns humorous, moving, and always engrossing. She ultimately gained penetrating insight into herself and the persons around her.

While bearing in mind that the Catholic faith and practice have changed in certain drastic ways since Ms. Houselander's youth, I think this autobiography would make an excellent gift to a young Catholic, or anyone who's interested in reading about a journey through (and to) religious faith.
Have waited many, many years to get this copy which replaces the original printing which got lost or raken. Finally a new edition. Thanks
I read this book several times before and was happy to be able to get it on my to have a personal copy.
a wonderful story but not what i have come to expect of the author from other works. it was interesting to a point but lost me in the details.
I have always enjoyed Houselander and this book is a account of her early life...she had to overcome abandonment by both of her parents at a young age, being sent to a French boarding school, and a shyness that prevented her from socializing with her peers. However, the download misfired and I had to keep my from switching to horizantal to vertical every 3 minutes and from large print to small. Reading the material was a challenge....perhaps you can correct this. Thank you, Joan Louise
I love Caryll Houselander's writing style and I found this book very interesting because it related how she grew up and started to develop as a writer and a Catholic. On the , the format is not the greatest, but for me it was worth it.
Will order this product again
